The 28th and 29th
of June was the date of the second weekend of this years Munster
Athletics Championships held in the CIT Athletics Arena. Seven athletes
from Belgooly AC took part with the performance of the week end going to Grace
McKenzie in the under 19 age group. This is Grace’s last year in the juvenile
ranks and she bowed out in style winning 5 gold medals in the Shot (10.01m),
Hurdles (15.37s new pb), Long Jump
(5.15m) Javelin (18.64m) and High Jump (1.70m). The high jump was a new
championship best breaking the old record of 1.65m set in 1998. This was a
great performance by Irelands
most talented up and coming heptathlon athlete.
Grace’s performance was backed up
by Tom Deasy in the boys under 17 winning 2 gold in the triple jump (12.26m new pb) and high
jump (1.75m) silver in the long jump (5.92m = pb) and bronze in the hurdles.
Padraig Nash in the boys under 15 competition was also in medal form winning a
silver in the high jump with a new pb of 1.70m and finishing 4th in
the long jump and hurdles (a qualifying position for the all Ireland championships). Leah Deasy
won her first Munster out door medal and
qualified fro her first all Ireland
championships by securing the bronze medal in the girls under 16 javelin. Leah
is a great inspiration to those athletes who don’t achieve success at younger
ages but still turn up to training each week and enjoy the sport success will
come if you keep working at your craft. Erica Deasy in the girls under 14
javelin finished 4th and secured qualification to the all Ireland
championships in her first javelin competition. Also taking part were Lorcan
McVeigh and Hayley Fitgearld in the boys and girls under 18 competition while
not winning medals but competed very well and achieved personal goals and this
is as important as the medals.
